How to Avoid Rental Scams

January 20, 2023

Searching for a new home is exciting, but it’s also a time to be aware of potential online rental scams. At Elara, your safety is our top priority. We want your rental experience to be as flawless and stress-free as possible. All interactions with our Leasing Team can be done by email at sayhello@elara.one or by calling (336) 228-5993.

Stay alert out there, and keep this in mind:

  • Always apply for Elara homes or schedule a tour through our website, listings.elara.one

  • Elara Property Management does not advertise on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. If you see Elara homes posted on these sites, please report them to sayhello@elara.one right away.

  • Real estate professionals will never ask you to wire money or pay before signing a lease.

  • Recognize warning signs. If you see a rent price that's unusually low compared to similar properties in the area, or if you notice excessive typos and errors in the listing description, steer clear.

  • Credible property managers will always require a rental application and credit check. If there is no screening process or the person you're speaking with seems overly pushy, trying to get you to rent and pay as quickly as possible (especially without touring the home first), consider these red flags.

  • If something looks suspicious or seems too good to be true, it could be. Do a quick Google search of the property’s address to make sure it exists and is actually available. Always make sure you can tour the property in person.
